There are a few basic rules for people when shaking hands with Americans
Look the other person in the eye
Use a firm grip, not too hard or too soft. It's similar to the strength you would use if you were peeling an apple with a knife. A firm grip indicates you are sincere
It should last for 2-4 seconds
Both men and women shake hands
Young people may shake the hand of an adult but children do not shake each other's hands
